Heart Surgery: Traditional & Minimally Invasive

Heart surgery addresses
problems such as coronary
artery blockages, valve
dysfunction and rhythm
disturbances.

We perform virtually every type of
Cardiac Surgery...

  • Cardiac Bypass Surgery (CABG)
  • Valve Replacement
  • Beating Heart Bypass (Off-pump Artery Bypass)
  • Minimally-Invasive bypass surgery
  • Cox-Maze
  • Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR)
  • Currently angioplasty and bypass surgery are the top two therapeutic procedures for people with coronary artery disease. More than once, our surgeons have been among the first to introduce new heart surgery techniques to the Richmond area. Many major heart surgeries now have minimally-invasive solutions and whenever possible, we utilize these techniques to minimize patient discomfort, blood loss, scarring and patient down time. Typically, minimally invasive surgery gets patients out of bed and back to life sooner.

The Most Advanced Cardiac Surgery Suite Complements an Outstanding Cardiac Surgery Staff

Our four cardiac operating rooms feature technology
    unavailable elsewhere in the area.

Real-time patient data and images are displayed on 52-inch, high-definition plasma screens that allow for videoconferencing. This means a surgeon never has to leave the patient’s side during surgery to confer with another physician who may be in another part of the hospital, or even in another part of the world.

New technology is also making a difference in our Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Progressive Care Unit. Thanks to in-room charting systems, nurses can enter data or view a patient’s chart right from the bedside. This allows nurses to spend more time with their patients, offering more personal care.

    Valve Replacement

If a surgeon cannot repair a heart valve, it is removed and replaced with an artificial (prosthetic) valve by sewing it into the remaining tissue from the natural valve. Over 95% of all valve replacements are performed for mitral or aortic valves. Dedicated, board-certified vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, cardiologists and others work together to ensure each patient receives the most appropriate treatment, whether minimally invasive or traditional. Our diagnostic vascular labs are fully accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories.
